Sample various Indonesian dishes with the rijsttafel at Tempo Doeloe.

Tapas & Crazy Cocktail Bar OLD CENTER SPANISH This quirky place is decked out like someplace Gaudí designed and is just off Rembrandtplein in the heart of Amsterdam’s night-time action. The tapas are not the world’s best and it doesn’t get going until after 11pm, but when the cocktails start coming across the bar—which is stacked with Spanish brandies and South American tequilas—you can forgive the food as the partying flows out into the streets. Friday and Saturday are salsa nights. Halvemaansteeg 8, off Rembrandtplein. 020/777-9090. Tapas 6€–9€. Dinner daily. Tram: 4, 9, or 14 to Rembrandtplein. Map p 93.

Tempo Doeloe CANAL RING INDONESIAN For authentic Indonesian cuisine, this place is hard to beat. You have to ring the bell to get in and it’s somewhat cramped. Dishes come in four levels of spiciness and there are three different rijsttafel options, including the 15-plate stimoelan and the vegetarian sayoeran as well as the sumptuous 25-plate istemewa. Other delicious choices include the 12-plate nasi koening and all of the vegetarian dishes. Reservations required. Utrechtsestraat 75, between Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. 020/625-6718. www.tempodoeloerestaurant.nl. Entrees 16€–27€; rijsttafel 30€–38€. Dinner daily. Tram: 4 to Keizersgracht. Map p 93.
